Title:                            Installing Assuria Auditor Licence Keys

  Version:                      1

Date:                           20th July 2006

The Assuria Auditor console requires the installation of one or more licence keys. These keys control the number of agents which can be supported, and whether XPress Updates can be applied to the agent. Keys may need to be installed both immediately after installation, and periodically thereafter. This technical note describes the process by which such keys should be installed.

Keys are typically distributed by e-mail, but may on occasion be distributed by other means. Depending on when the key was generated, the distribution route, and other circumstances, new keys may have in a name in one of the following formats:

iss_<keyid>_key.isslicense
iss_<keyid>_key.isslicense.xml

On receipt of such a licence key, it should be copied to a location of the users choosing. This location should be on, or accessible by file share or similar from, the computer on which the console is installed.

The exact mechanism by which the key should be installed depends on whether the console has already been updated to include support for version 6 licences, introduced with XPress Update 10. The best way to determine this is to look in the Assuria Auditor console install directory (by default 'C:\Program Files\ISS\System Scanner Console'), and see if the subdirectory 'keys' exists.

If the 'keys' subdirectory exists, then the console does support version 6 licences. The licence key should be installed by simply copying it to the 'keys' subdirectory, and then restarting the console. If the licence file has a '.xml' filename suffix, this should be removed.

If the 'keys' subdirectory does not exist, then the console does not support version 6 licences.  The licence key must be installed by stopping the console, renaming the new licence key file to 'iss.key' and copying it directly to the Assuria Auditor console install directory (by default 'C:\Program Files\ISS\System Scanner Console'). If a file called 'iss.key' already exists there, it is suggested that it be backed up before being overwritten. Once the new 'iss.key' file has been added, the XPress Update installation utility should be used to bring the console up to at least XPress Update level 10, before restarting the console. If the console is restarted before reaching XPress Update level 10, then the new key will not be recognised, and functionality may be inhibited.

It should be noted that with version 6 licences, there can be multiple active licence keys; Assuria Technical Note 1 on Licence Aggregation gives advice on how these licences are aggregated and managed. Without version 6 licences only one licence can be active at a time.
